Internet packet traffic congestion

چکیده
In recent years various models for packet traffic in networks have been developed. Most models have used Poisson-like sources which replicate traffic that is voice type. Such sources are said to be short-range-dependent (SRD). The early models of Solé and Valverde demonstrated that longrange-dependent (LRD) traffic could arise in the queue length dynamics at a given node within a communications network even when the sources are LRD free. In this paper we consider the nature of the onset of congestion as load is increased in various types of network (regular, small-world and scale-free) and contrast their congestion behaviour by considering packet latency, or lifetime, indicators.

The Internet is a collection of packet based, hop-by-hop routed networks. Internet traffic engineering is the process of allocating resources to meet the performance requirements of users and operators for their traffic. Current mechanisms for doing so, exemplified by TCP’s congestion control, or the variety of packet marking disciplines, concentrate on allocating resources on a per-packet basi...

Existing congestion controllers have been designed with TCP traffic in mind. Changing traffic patterns on the Internet imply that on some tight links all UDP video streams will occur. Three different congestion controllers (RAP, TFRC, and fuzzy-logic based), already successful in avoiding instability in current TCPdominated internets, were tested across a tight link in which video traffic domin...
